Anti-Virus Programs
New viruses are created every day by people looking to be destructive so keep your anti-virus program up to date. There are many anti-virus programs available from paid to free. AVG is the one I would recommend if your are looking for a free anti-virus program.
Back ups
Backup on a regular basis. You never know when you could experience data loss. Do your self a favor and keep your information backed up. It can cost a couple thousand if you have to have a hard drive manufacturer rebuild the hard drive so they can retrieve the data for you if your hard drive stops working. USB storage devices are a very cheap means of doing this. Another great solution is a hard drive placed in an external drive bay. These can be the most cost effective solution if you have a lot of data to back up.
Spyware and Spyware Programs
You should have a good spyware blocker / remover. Some anti-virus programs even come with them already built in. AVG ant-virus is one such program that comes with this feature built in.
Spyware is very dangerous because what it dose is once on your machine it allows the creator to view what your doing while connected to the internet.
Fire Wall
Firewall's are important to have when on the internet. A firewall helps to keep the information on your computer safe from the eyes of hackers who would like to view all of your personal information, or even destroy your data. With out a firewall, hackers can steal any files on your computer they wish to.
There are two kinds of firewall's you can have. One is software based such as Window's built in firewall and the second is a hardware firewall. The hardware firewall is a very good solution but for most users a software firewall will do just fine.
However if you have a business a hardware firewall is highly recommended as it provides the best protection while you are online.
Registry Cleaners
Registry cleaners are one of those things that can do great harm to your computer and some are even spyware, trying to pass as legitimate registry cleaners. So be very cartful and look for reviews and on forums before deciding if you want to use a registry cleaner. They can indeed make your computer faster if it is starting to run slowly but some of these programs can cause damage to the registry while removing invalid registry keys.
After doing some reviews of different registry cleaners the one that seems to do the best job for free without causing damage to your computer is Comodo System-Cleaner. Robin's Den takes no reasonability if you decide to use a registry cleaner.
Disk Defragmenter
Disk Defragmenter is part of window's system tools. This is a very useful program and one that you should use every once and a while. By using disk defragmenter, it will allow for the information to be organized better on your hard drive so that you can access the data more quickly when trying to complete a task such as opening a writing document or playing a game.
Power Surge Protection
Power surges and power spikes are common in our everyday life. They can cause a great deal of damage to electronics and computers are no exception. To try and prevent this from happening you should invest in a power surge protection bar or a UPS power supply as shown. UPS power supply's both protect you from surges and provide the user with time to safely save and shut down their computer. Remember when deciding on a Surge protection solution to get the best one possible. It dose not pay to go cheap.
Recommendation
There are many choices you can make and it may seem to be a lot perhaps, so for those who would like to know what I recommend as one of the best solutions, it is "Zone Alarm Extreme Security + DataLock" as it has all three of these aspects rolled into one program. This is a very good program and is extremely good at blocking all kinds of nasty things you can get from being on the internet.
The other option is to have a hardware firewall and then have a anti-virus / spyware program such as AVG. The great thing about a hardware firewall is once you have it, you have a Fire wall for life.
